The Internet: Nominee for Nobel Peace Prize 2010

It is back.Last year it kept us buzzing when the Nobel peace prize was conferred to Barack Obama. This year also,it will keep us guessing and talking as the Internet has been nominated for the Nobel peace prize.First question that could have crossed your mind as it did mine was Why?Has the internet contributed to world peace through better communication? This is an attempt to find out the answer.

Internet has became a platform where people irrespective of their nationality, religion, and culture all over the world  can communicate, collaborate, and share knowledge and in the process spread peace and harmony. For instance, what happened in Iran after the latest election and the role played by web as a medium of movement ,which otherwise could have not been possible, goes on to say the importance of web in global hope and peace.
The Internet For Peace Manifesto ,displayed on the official Internet for Peace site, mentions the reason for the nomination
We have finally realized that the Internet is much more than a network of computers. It is an endless web of people. Men and women from every corner of the globe are connecting     to one another, thanks to the biggest social interface ever known to  humanity.Digital culture
has laid the foundations for a new kind of society. And this society is advancing dialogue, debate and consensus through communication.Because democracy has always flourished where there is openness, acceptance, discussion and participation. And contact with others has always been the most effective antidote against hatred and conflict. That's why the Internet is a tool for peace. That's why anyone who uses it can sow the seeds of non-violence.And hat's why the next Nobel Peace Prize should go to the Net.A Nobel for each and every one of us"

I would like to mention here some of the statements made by few prominent personalities :
“People want peace, and when given a voice, they’ll work tirelessly for it,”
“In the short term, a Twitter account may be no match for an AK-47, but in the long term the keyboard is mightier than the sword.”
“The strongest transforming force of the modern era.”
"It gave all of us the chance to take back the power from governments and multinationals,” .
“It made the world a totally transparent place.”
As far as my support is concerned i  vote for the internet.
Would you like to see Internet as the recipient of Nobel Peace prize,2010?

  1. Well obviously the questions will be raised again if Internet is selected as the winner...and these questions will be as valid as they were in the case of Obama. No doubt it has created the platform where entire world speaks and share there views. But if you ask me weather it has contributed to the world peace I have my doubts. Go to the various blog site where any sensitive issue is discussed and you can read all the hate blog entries people thow at one another. When on a simple chat room on a cricket website people are so sensitive about the comments and they get so agitated just imagine what the two will do face to face. This is just one instance, visit any site, Youtube or social networking site, you will find numerous example.

So maybe Internet is trying to bring the world closer ...but it has still a long way to go before it can be conferred with a Nobel prize for peace. So thumbs down for internet.

  2. @Saurabh:
Reason given for conferring Nobel to Obama was that he is in a position to deliver peace and hope
    to the world.
Now if Obama can then why not Internet? It's already on it way to became the 'weapon of mass reconstruction'.Yes i agree that there are negative communication on web but if you see the larger picture, internet is growing as a tool of peace and harmony.

We are humans not by the virtue of name(i really wonder who has tossed the name"humans" to our species) but by the psychology that keeps on bluffing the most researchers around.Psychology gives birth to thoughts and thoughts to actions.Internet can be treated as a action of a thought generated from the psychology of a common platform. It refers to a common path for all the people no matter where they intend to go and in the way you tend to find so many people as friends as well as seem to be enemies who can synchronise with u or tend to oppose u in actions as well as thoughts.

It would be annoying to label a common path as good or bad because ultimately its only a channel. Its the people who decide to follow what they want ,whether they want to spread peace or violence but the real irony is we always try to judge the common psychology and not the action.

I support internet for the peace prize but if anytime a mobel prize for anger or anguish is on the line, internet will not lag behind.
